"This is without doubt the best speedway book that I've ever read. I just couldn't put it down. And it's so much more than a book about speedway. It's a story about a man's life - a man never to be forgotten." Former speedway World Champion ANDERS MICHANEK
TOMMY JANSSON could have become the best speedway rider in the world - and many insist he would have been - if only he could have just lived a little longer.
One of the all-time Swedish superstars of this dangerous sport, Tommy reached his first World Final at the age of 18. After a brief spell with Wembley Lions in 1971, he returned to England the following year to make a fresh start with Wimbledon Dons, where he became an instant hit with his stylish performances on the track and striking good looks that made him one of the most popular riders ever with his legion of female followers.
In the early 70s, young girls pulled down their Donny Osmond and David Cassidy posters and replaced them with bare-chested pictures of their new pin-up idol, Tommy.
He won the World Pairs Championship twice (with Anders Michanek), in 1973 and 1975, and Wimbledon's No.1 also established himself as a top international before it all went horribly wrong.
Tommy Jansson was on the threshold of greatness when he crashed and died in Stockholm on May 20, 1976. He was aged just 23.
This is not only a book about speedway. It's about how a young, working class kid from the city that's been called 'the murder capital of Sweden' emerged to become a legend. It's about fulfilling dreams, coping with enormous pressure and high expectations and about what makes some sportsmen achieve so much more than others.
It's about the joy of life. And about grief.
In this unique book, translated and edited from the Swedish original published in 2005, author Magnus Nystrom talks to many of Tommy Jansson's former rivals and team-mates and to those who were closest to the ill-fated youngster from Eskilstuna, including his parents and former girlfriend. They each have their own special memories of Tommy and stories to tell.
Thirty years on from one of speedway's biggest ever tragedies, it is very clear that Tommy Jansson still has a place in the hearts of many, many people and that he will never be forgotten.
