To view or buy - thousands of great speedway images from the past!
RETRO SPEEDWAY presents the biggest speedway photographic collection online . . . literally hundreds of thousands of images from the sport's early pioneer days until the late-90s.
Many of the older photographs were taken by Alf Weedon (right), the doyen of speedway photographers who started taking speedway pictures at tracks since the late-1940s.
We are also delighted to showcase images from our Ken Carpenter collection. A popular character around the tracks throughout the 80s and 90s with his trademark beard and glasses, Ken (left) served Speedway Mail International magazine with distinction until its closure in the early-90s. His colour photography was exceptional and hundreds of his images are to be found here within our photo galleries.
Whether you are interested in portrait or action shots, team groups, internationals, British League, National League, World Finals or all the major individual events and presentation pics, even numerous junior riders . . . we should be happy to help. We feel fairly certain that there isn't a rider from the 1970s, 80s or 90s that we don't have a picture of!
We are delighted to give you this unique opportunity to purchase the vast majority of our pictures of these riders who competed at all levels of the sport - from world champions and top internationals to lower league reserves and even second-halvers.
Please note, however, not all pictures that appear in our galleries are for sale, so please contact us first - either by phone on 01708 734 502 or email at editorial@retro-speedway.com - to confirm availability.
We would like to thank all those who have taken and/or supplied a number of additional pictures for use on this site, especially John Somerville. Scotland-based John is the most avid collector of speedway photographs and his unrivalled collection includes the many thousands of images he acquired from leading snappers such as Mike Patrick and Trevor Meeks, for many years the main duo supplying Speedway Star magazine. John has kindly agreed to let us show a number of their images here, along with some of those taken by the late Wright Wood whose vast collection is also in John's possession in Edinburgh.
John Hipkiss, another regular on the speedway scene at home and abroad in the 70s, 80s and 90s, is another whose superb work we are delighted to present.
A big thanks also to others who have contributed and whose co-operation has made it possible to display so many pictures here, including: John Chaplin, Graeme Frost, Ken Burnett, Phil Hilton, Martin Neal, Bob Radford, Tony Lethbridge, the late Don Ringrow, the late Bruce Grainger, Richard Bott, John Hall, Peter Perry, Martin Mauger, Dave Schooling, Glen Norton, Alan Kingswell, Steve Magro, Bill and Wayne Meyer from Australia, Ray Wilson, Nigel Boocock, Eric Boocock, John Sumpter, Alan Jones, Dave Robinson, Jay McCaffery, Jeff Higgott, Alan Legg . . . with sincere apologies to anybody we may have overlooked in error.
We'll be adding more and more great images from the past as the weeks and months go by, so why not visit here again soon to see what’s new.
MYSTERY MEN We would really appreciate your help in putting names to the many faces featured in the 'Mystery Men' section. If you think you know who's who, then please email us with names and we'll get those pictured properly captioned and transferred to the correct picture gallery.
In the meantime, just email Retro Speedway’s Tony Mac at editorial@retro-speedway.com with the name of the rider(s) or team group(s) that you are interested in, as well as the year in question if possible, and let our research team do the rest!
