ORIGINALLY published in paperback format in 2004, Confessions has been updated since John Berry's death in 2012 with additional tributes from legendary speedway world champions and riders who rode under him for Ipswich and England.
Former Ipswich Speedway and England boss John Berry lifts the lid on the sport's last golden era with this, his controversial first book. Including:
* Berry's personal thoughts on the famous Ipswich trio of Louis, Sanders and Davey.
* Why he didn't see eye to eye with English World Champion Peter Collins.
* Why he regretted not making Kenny Carter his England captain.
* The bitter rows and in-fighting among fellow promoters that has damaged the sport.
* The truth behind his rift with John Cook and his disgust at America's World Cup antics.
* What he really thinks of Mauger, Olsen and Lee as people, as well as riders.
* Why he agreed to fix an international race.
* Why he offered to resign as England boss.
* The BSPA conference that reduced him to tears.
* How speedway caused the break-up of his first marriage.
* His final despair in charge at Wimbledon before emigrating to Australia.
* What he thinks of the Grand Prix series, the people who run it, and his fears for the sport's future...
All this and so much more from one of the most respected promoters in the sport's history.
About the Author
John Berry was speedway's most successful and respected promoters for most of the sport's 70s golden era, when he transformed Ipswich Witches from a low key backwater club into British League champions and cup winners, moulded from a team of largely home-grown local talent. As England team manager, he guided the Lions to World Team Cup glory in Poland and became one of the most outspoken voices who never shied away from controversy and always stood by his beliefs. After leaving speedway in 1989 and emigrating to Australia, JB carried those trademark characteristics into journalism. He was the forthright lead columnist for Backtrack magazine right up to his sudden death, aged 67, in 2012.
