MIKE The BIKE The MICHAEL LEE Story The sensational double DVD from Retro Speedway
Only £18 for four hours of compulsive viewing!
TEENAGE sensation Michael Lee was one of the most gifted natural speedway riders of his generation, who fulfilled a schoolboy dream when he was crowned World Champion at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden in September 1980 - a magnificent year in which the Cambridgeshire-born racer also played a key part in England¹s World Team Cup victory.
A year later, at the age of 25, he added the World Long-track title to his illustrious list of speedway honours, which include back-to-back British Championships (1977 & '78), as well as the Commonwealth and Inter-Continental finals he won in 1979.
From the moment he made his debut for his local track King's Lynn in 1975, 'Mike the Bike' was idolised by thousands who saw him rapidly blossom into an international superstar - only the fourth Englishman in speedway history to win the world title.
He was popular, too, in his two seasons with Poole in the early-80s . . . but then Michael found himself labelled a 'Bad Boy' and was initially banned from the sport for FIVE YEARS. Although he attempted a comeback with King's Lynn, it didn't work out and he was lost to the sport as a rider years before he had time to fulfil his undoubted talent.
Arrested for possession of cannabis with intent to supply, he 'went off the rails' for a period and ended up serving THREE separate prison sentences during the 80s and 90s. Michael recalls what it was like 'doing time' behind bars and talks from the heart about his decent into drugs, the reasons behind it and the effects that had on his career and relationships with others, including his father and former moto-cross star Andy Lee.
In this official DVD, produced with Mike's full approval and co-operation and including great action footage of him at his brilliant best, Lee does a lot of soul-searching. He talks very candidly about all of the highs and lows of his brilliant racing career, as well as the major problems he encountered both on and off the track.
He relives his days as a schoolboy rebel who bunked off classes to pursue his motorcycling dreams, his introduction to speedway at the Mildenhall training track, followed by his debut season for National League Boston Barracudas before his sensational Test debut for England aged 17.
Michael appeared to have the world at his feet and destined to add more world titles to the one he achieved in 1980 - until it all went horribly wrong for him in spectacular fashion. His fall from grace cost him his marriage, loss of contact with his three children and every penny he ever earned as a top class racer who was at the top of his profession.
But this is also a heart-warming story with a positive twist. Michael reveals how he fought back from the depths of despair to find new love and rebuild his life.
Now he enjoys a reputation as one of speedway's most widely respected engine tuners of the modern era - he prepares motors for new England sensation and 2010 Grand Prix competitor Tai Woffinden.
Mike the Bike is a compelling story of a supremely talented and controversial character you simply dare not miss.
As well as new interviews with Mike himself, we also talk to his partner and soul-mate Nicky, as well as his father Andy Lee.
Including hundreds of photographs and still images - some from the Lee family archives -never previously published.
